Whistl Trials UK's First Emission-Free Delivery

January 2025

We've taken another step forward on our road to Net Zero by participating in the UK’s first emission-free delivery trial.

The initiative has been led by XeroE (part of Delivery Mates), working in partnership with Varamis Rail, to integrate containerised cargo bikes, electric vehicles, and electric rail freight into a seamless, sustainable distribution chain.

The trial took place over a week with daily packages from Whistl locations in Birmingham and Glasgow transported through the emission-free network.

Trial is Sponsored by Department for Transport

XeroE’s electric vans transported the goods from the depot in Birmingham to the train station. The goods were then loaded onto Varamis’ overnight electric train to Glasgow. On arrival, an electric van moved them to XeroE’s depot before being delivered by RYTLE cargo bikes to the customer’s door.

The expected benefits of using this multi-modal approach include reduced emissions and lower urban congestion.

The trial was part of ongoing activities planned by the Freight Innovation Cluster and has been sponsored by the Department for Transport.

Gareth Hughes, Business Services & ESG Director, said: “One of the biggest challenges facing the logistics industry is the ability to move goods at distance, sustainably and efficiently. We are pleased to have been given the opportunity to participate in this trial and look forward to exploring new initiatives to create a more sustainable supply chain.”

In 2023, Whistl announced its aim to reach Net Zero by 2045. More specifically, the logistics specialist announced its goal to achieve a 100% Zero and Ultra Low Emission Small Van fleet by 2030 and a 100% Zero and Ultra Low Emission HGV fleet by 2040.

What is Whistl's ESG Strategy?

The Whistl Group has committed to achieving Overall Net-Zero by 2045. Its targets have been verified and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), using 2022 figures as a baseline for calculations.

The Group's overall ESG strategy is "to deliver competitive services for customers whilst enriching our colleagues and communities and minimising our impact on the environment."

Meeting our emission reduction targets is one of three strategic pillars. As well as 'preserving our natural environment', Whistl is committed to 'valuing our colleagues' and providing 'fulfilling opportunities'.

Whistl's annual ESG report outlines its full strategy and progress against its Group targets.
