E.ON has become the first utility to sign up to use the Whistl Fuel Carbon Calculator. This will enable the major energy provider to calculate its reduced carbon emissions as a result of choosing Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) rather than diesel for the collection and trunking of its bulk mail.

Use of Carbon Calculator Will Provide Mutual Benefits

E.ON supplies energy to one in seven residential and business addresses in the UK and plays a key role in Europe’s clean energy transition.

This latest arrangement forms part of a three-year contract renewal and will enable E.ON to further reduce its carbon impact under Scope 3 reporting*.

Meanwhile, by adopting HVO, Whistl will also reduce the CO2 it generates.

The Fuel Carbon Calculator initiative was launched in August 2024 and is the first of its kind in the Downstream Access (DSA) bulk mail market.

Leading organisations, including NatWest and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), have been able to establish the number of litres of fuel used to transport their bulk business mail and subsequently calculate their reduced CO2 emissions by using HVO rather than diesel.

Just as we are supporting our customers at home and in business to benefit from smarter energy use, we’re also doing what we can to make our own operations more efficient and sustainable. By adopting HVO with Whistl we can be reducing emissions while maintaining a regular flow of communication with our millions of customers across the UK.

Mark Daniels, Commercial Director, E.ON

We are delighted that E.ON has renewed their contract and opted to embrace our innovative HVO solution, which supports their business strategy and enables them to reduce both their and Whistl’s carbon emissions. Innovation is key to meeting our Net Zero goal and we look forward to more customers and the environment benefiting from the use of the Whistl Fuel Carbon Calculator.

Ian Keilty, CEO, Whistl

What is the ESG Strategy of the Whistl Group?

Our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy has an over-arching goal to achieve net-zero operations by 2045. Our Group targets have been approved and validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and we annually report on our progress.

Using 2022 as a base year for calculations, we have committed to the following near-term targets:

  • To reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030.
  • Reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions by 52% per million GBP gross profit by 2030.
  • Commit that 90% of our suppliers by spend, covering purchased goods and services, will have science-based targets by 2026.

In addition, the Group has set long-term targets of reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2040 and reducing Scope 3 emissions 97% per million GBP by 2045.

Initiatives such as the Whistl Fuel Carbon Calculator and use of HVO fuel are crucial to helping us reach these milestones and preserving our natural environment, a key strategic pillar.

In recognition of our progress, the Whistl Group has achieved a Gold rating from EcoVadis, and is ranked  in the top 5% of businesses ranked for sustainability.

*Scope 3 encompasses emissions that are not produced by the company itself and are not the result of activities from assets owned or controlled by them, but by those that it's indirectly responsible for up and down its value chain.
