6 Habits That Will Make You More Productive

Productivity is not measured by your intelligence or skill, but by how you use your time to achieve the best results. By adopting new habits at work and home, productivity can easily be boosted. These 6 habits are examples of actions you can introduce to your daily life that will help you make every hour count.

1. Learn to ignore distractions

By limiting interference from the outside world, you can gain hours of previously wasted time.

Take the time to figure out what distracts you then decide how you can avoid it. For example, if you regularly check Facebook, make a habit of only checking your feed during your lunch break. If it’s a morning phone call from your partner, let them know they should only contact you in an emergency. Be ruthless and remove anything that is distracting you.

2. Prepare

Preparing for the day ahead can make it easier to get things done.

At the start of each day make a list of important tasks to complete to help you keep on top of things. Also think about the smaller things you do throughout your day, and look at whether you could automate them, or save time by doing those in advance.

Simple measures at work such as setting up an email filter so your e-mails are automatically placed in the relevant folder can save you lots of time.

3. Schedule time to work

While it may not always seem like it, we actually spend more time out of the office than in it.

Whether that time is spent commuting or waiting for kids to finish an after-school activity, using this wasted time to fit in extra work could improve productivity massively. That 30 minute tube journey home? Read the report you haven’t got round to yet.

Review your diary and schedule meetings or prepare meeting notes.

4. Complete the hardest task before lunch

Ditch the procrastination, and make it a habit to tackle the most challenging tasks at the start of your day.

While it can be tempting to conserve your energy for the rest of the day, by working on harder tasks first you are using your brain when it is at its best. As fatigue kicks in towards the end of the day, you can focus on the smaller, less challenging tasks, safe in the knowledge that the most demanding activities are complete for the day.

5. Allocate breaks

By allowing yourself to take regular breaks, you are helping to increase productivity.

While time away from your work may feel like a bad way to get ahead, it has been proved many times that scheduling breaks is actually beneficial. Make it a habit to schedule short, regular breaks, preferably away from your desk, this will boost your energy levels and help with mental fatigue.

6. Take time for yourself

It’s important that when you have the weekend off, you take the weekend off!

Spend your time doing the things that you enjoy, whether it’s reading a book, walking in the country, or spending quality time with friends and family. Taking the time to do the things you love is one of the best ways to be productive.
